A new brand AND a new framework for thinking
Since launching in 2008, Andrew Burns Architecture has become a stalwart in the industry – garnering respect for projects as varied as Australia House in Japan, accommodation at Three Capes Track in Tasmania and Cranbrook School’s site in Wolgan Valley.
The relationship between ABA and Right Angle is strong, having worked together on projects including Geelong Grammar – we share an admiration for how we each work and our ideological approach to urban design and thinking intersect at many points. With this in mind, Andrew approached us to refine his eponymous brand into something that better reflected the size of his growing team and the variety of work they now produce.

Andrew and his team provided us with a vision for their organisation – a poignant undertaking for any creative business – that served as a great starting point for our own research. From this, we teased out a set of provocations that eventually led us to a shortlist of potential names
We identified recurring dichotomies in the practice’s work, and began to evolve a concept around the term “and” – not hindered by the fact that it already had a great connection to Andrew’s name.
From here, Right Angle began to build upon this concept, developing a tone of voice that was as warm, personal and grounded as Andrew and his team. This marked a decisive shift away from the jargon-heavy writing so prevalent within architecture and informed the subsequent design work.
We delivered a suite that included stationery, business cards, presentation templates and a new website, all of which were built around a foundational grid that referenced the title block typically found on architectural drawings – importantly, to allow the focus to remain on the architecture. We also shifted the information architecture on the website to focus first on the people behind the work, then the philosophy that guides the firm’s approach and finally the projects themselves.
Together, Architecture AND’s name and visual assets celebrate the firm’s local and international expertise in architecture that’s second to nature and design thinking to make cities work.
